Manikutty, mechanical and an electrical engineer, graduating from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (London) and the Institution of Electrical Engineers (London), joined the Indian Railways as a mechanical engineer in 1969, did his doctoral programme in Management (Fellow Programme) from the Indian Institute of Ahmedabad, India, worked as professor in the Indian Railways' in-house training college at Baroda between 1985 and 1987 and 1989 and 1990, deputed to the Aqaba Railway Corporation, Ma'an, Jordan from 1987-1989, joined the Indian Institute of Management as a member of faculty in the Public Systems Group in June 1990, retired from IIMA in December 2010 and continued on contract till March 31, 2012, currently teaches independently in universities and institutions, besides reading and writing)
